Macron says he wants Notre Dame rebuilt within five years

The French President Emmanuel Macron has said he wants the Notre Dame rebuilt within five years.

The historic building suffered significant damage when a blaze broke out on the roof yesterday evening.

Although much the roof was destroyed - including the central spire - firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, leaving the main structure largely intact.

Entire FAI board to step down in July

The entire FAI board is to step down this summer.

Shane Ross told the Oireachtas Sports Committee that FAI had written to him to indicate that "decisive action" was being taken "as a result of the ongoing pressure" the association has faced.

It comes after John Delaney stepped down from his new role as executive vice president at the association while an independent investigation into "issues of concern" to the FAI board is carried out.

The speaker of the US House of Representatives has warned that there will be no new trade deal between the US and the UK if Brexit harms the Irish peace process.

Nancy Pelosi was speaking as she began a two-day visit to Ireland.

The Taoiseach has confirmed the cost of the National Broadband Plan could be around €3 billion.

It had been hoped Ministers would unveil details of the project this week.

However, Communications Minister Richard Bruton yesterday confirmed that the process has been delayed until after Easter.

The defence has finished its closing arguments to the jury in Patrick Quirke’s murder trial.

The 50-year-old farmer from Breanshamore, Co Tipperary has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his love rival – local DJ Bobby ‘Mr Moonlight’ Ryan.

The jurors in the trial have now heard from both legal teams for a final time and are expected to begin their deliberations next week.
