The Government has said it hopes new bereavement leave for those who suffer pregnancy loss will help tackle “stigma” within the workplace and wider society.

Yesterday, the Cabinet gave its approval for legislation that would for five days of leave following pregnancy loss prior to 23 weeks gestation.

Those impacted would be paid 70% of the daily rate, up to a maximum of €110 a day.

It is expected that the legislation would be enacted before Christmas.

On Newstalk Breakfast, Enterprise Minister Peter Burke said some underestimate the number of pregnancies that result in miscarriage.

“One in four pregnancies end in pregnancy loss,” he explained.

“It's a very difficult time for women and their partners; to assist them, give them time in that bereavement and to really socialise the conversation in the workplace, I think this is a positive step forward.

“One of the stark things that came forward is that almost 15% of women did not even speak about their pregnancy loss because of stigma or because they were concerned.

“I think that's very sad that a lot of people suffer in silence.”

The Fine Gael TD continued that an official period of bereavement leave would mean Irish society ‘gives the hand of friendship’ towards those who are suffering.

“Looking essentially at the data that we had to research, which is based on real life testimony of women, about 48% of women went back to work with significant trauma,” he said.

“[They] also experienced physical symptoms subsequent to their miscarriage or pregnancy loss, which is a very significant challenge.

“So, I think this is a good thing that we can try and start to encourage people that there is no stigma attached to this.”
