While Pat Kenny was broadcasting live from New Ross at the Kennedy Summer School, local tour guide Myles Courtney made a surprising revelation about JFK's visit in 1963.

The Kennedy Summer School is taking place this weekend, which is often hailed as Political Nerds Day.

The Pat Kenny Show was broadcasting live from the school in New Ross, and had local tour guide Myles Courtney on the show to discuss some of the history of the town.

Talk soon turned to JFK's visit in 1963, as his family hailed from the town, and the lasting impact it has had on New Ross.

Mr Courtney shared: "It's made a huge difference. Absolutely, Pat. [But] he wasn't supposed to come to New Ross, really.

"Andy Minahan and the town engineer Harry Finnegan and a few others were constantly sending President Kennedy notes every time he became the congressman and when he got elected. And then he [replied] and said he was delighted that he was part of NewRoss and that's where he came from."

President Kennedy's younger brother Ted had come to visit the year before and had met Andy Minihan, with Mr Courtney adding that people were a bit "nervous" about what he might say as he was "quite the character".

Willie Kielthy, who was at the address in 1093, added: "I had just looked up the other day and I got the budget for Kennedy's visit to New Ross, which was £1,000. £50 for the decoration of the town."

Mr Kielthy added that when JFK was assassinated merely six months later, it was "quite tragic for the town" who had such pride in having a president from the town.

But they can take solace in the fact that he seemingly really enjoyed the visit, and it is "obvious" he did from the footage from the special day.
