The official start of summer is just a few days away, and it looks like the weather is set for a change for the better this weekend.

This weekend is set to be the hottest of the year so far.

That's despite a wet start to Friday in eastern counties in particular.

Those conditions are expected to ease off later.

Forecasters say Saturday is then set to be a ‘very mild or warm day’ with good sunny spells.

Temperatures will reach as high as 20 or 21 degrees Celsius, with the warmest temperatures inland.

There is a warning of some isolated showers during the day, however.

The warm temperatures are expected to continue through Sunday, which is expected to be a mostly dry day.

Met Éireann says temperatures will generally range from 19 to 21 degrees Celsius on Sunday, although it won’t be quite as warm along parts of the south and west coasts.

Head of forecasting Evelyn Cusack told Newstalk Breakfast it is indeed looking like a warm weekend, despite the dull weather today.

She said: "It's a pretty dull, wet start over the east of the country - brighter further west. It will stay quite dull in the east for Friday, but that rain gradually easing.

"It does look better over the course of the weekend... temperatures getting up to 20 or 21 degrees. It won't be sunshine all the way - there will be some clouds... but overall very pleasant weather."

Tuesday June 1st is the first day of "official summer", and Evelyn said it's looking quite warm next week as well albeit with a risk of thunder rain.

She added: "With the sunshine, it's very strong at this time of year, so don't get sunburn - that's the main safety message - and also [be safe] on the water."
