The proposed redesign of St Stephen’s Green shopping centre resembles a “carbuncle” and is best described as “architorture”, a local councillor has argued.
The owners of the shopping centre plan to lodge plans with Dublin City Council to redevelop it in the coming days.
The move comes several months after An Coimiúsin Pleanála refused planning permission for the €100 million project.
On Lunchtime Live, Cllr Mannix Flynn described it as an “iconic building”.
“What we’re doing here now is destroying this place and what we’re actually putting in its place is ‘archittorture’ - that’s the terminology that we’d use,” he said.
Cllr Flynn added that he found it “flabbergasting” that so many prominent architects have not produced a “great work” for the people of Dublin.
“They are well known for producing great works abroad,” he said.
“Why haven’t they produced a great work here?
“It’s extraordinary that we have a situation where St Stephen’s Green has a great setting, we have the city centre as a great setting, we have Grafton Street as a great setting.
“And all they can give us is this carbuncle.”
