Are parents morally obliged to help pay for your wedding?
With the cost of everything going up - most notably housing - many young couples struggle to afford the wedding they would love to host.
On Lunchtime Live, TikToker and podcast host ‘Dating Orange’ said she does not believe there should be an “actual expectation” that your parents contribute.
“You definitely shouldn't be expecting it,” she said.
“You should be able to afford the wedding yourself and anything extra that people give you is a bonus.
“My parents brought it up to me after, like very quickly after I got engaged and that they would like to do something, which was very generous of them and I'm very happy, but I wasn't expecting it.”
Dating Orange added that all families are different and that some would prefer to help their children get on the property ladder, rather than throw a more extravagant wedding.
“A friend of mine in work, we were chatting about it and she said that her parents have helped her out previously with the house,” she said.
“So, there was absolutely no expectation to get something for her wedding and they're not contributing to that.”
Dating Orange added that the families of grooms generally still seem less interested in contributing.
“When I was chatting away to my friends, it seemed to be the bride's parents still feel that expectation that they do [help pay],” she said.
“I'm sure it's moved on now and there are lots of grooms’ parents who do give money and that's fine.
“But it was just funny to think about these kind of old, old-y kind of traditions that are still carried through.”
