The “devastating” potholes in parts of rural Wicklow need to be dealt with on an “emergency basis”, a local councillor has urged.

Speaking on Lunchtime Live, Greystones based Tom Fortune said there is a cross party consensus that the issue needs to be urgently dealt with.

However, he added that they currently lack the funds to properly tackle it.

“Right across the county, the roads have been devastated in some of the districts,” he said.

“Roads have been, one or two roads have actually nearly been washed away.

“We had a long discussion about this on Monday at our County Council meeting and everyone's on the same page.

“There's a requirement of about €16 million required to really sort out the problem and that's aside from the normal budget we would get.”

Cllr Fortune continued that the public are "frustrated" because they see the potholes but nothing is ever done about them.

“In some of the areas, it's worse than others,” he said.

“But there's a major problem right across the county as we speak.

“And it's an emergency - based on what I said to you - and it really is going to have to be dealt with on an emergency basis.”
