The USA is headed to the polls as the midterm elections take place across the country, with the Democrats expected to win the most seats.

All political eyes are on the USA as they go to the polls to vote in the midterm elections.

The Republicans are expected to take a hit during the elections, which will see citizens vote for the US House of Representatives and about 33 or 34 of the 100 seats in the US Senate.

Both of these chambers are what makes up the US Congress.

Given how President Donald Trump reacted to the result of the 2020 election, there are some concerns that he might try to dispute the results if they don't go Republican's way.

Speaking to The Claire Byrne Show, former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar explained how people should be prepared for the result to be disputed.

He shared: "There are concerns that President Trump might try to dispute the election, and might launch court cases in certain states where there's a dispute [or] might allege there was voter fraud.

"So we'll remember what happened when he lost the presidential election to Joe Biden, and there was the march on Congress, and it could be argued that he's less sound in his mind than he was back then.

"So people have to be prepared for the possibility that this result could be disputed.

"But that's also why the margin, I think, is very important too, because it's much harder to dispute a result if Democrats start winning states that just weren't seen to be even on the radar a year ago, like Texas, like Iowa, like Kansas, for example.

"Congress can make life very difficult for the Trump administration for the next two years, and they're minded to do that.

"A lot of Democrats felt that when President Biden was elected, it was kind of back to normal, back to nice guy, let's go back to regular politics.

"The mood is now totally different. There's a mood to really go after them and go after MAGA and anyone associated with them, and I think you're going to see that play out over the next two years.

"The old Congress remains in session, can still vote on things for the rest of the year. The new Congress comes into session in January."

It has been reported that President Trump is already putting things into place to launch a dispute as California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused him of trying to throw out 20,000 votes in the Golden State.

He shared a video explaining his claim, and said: "Just hours ago, President Trump went to the United States Supreme Court and asked it to throw out 20,000 California ballots.

"20,000 voters who followed the rules. His excuse is a lie that there's widespread illegal voting in California.

"He's been setting this up for months and months so he can call [today's] election stolen if he doesn't get the result he likes.

"His Justice Department has even hit local election workers with criminal grand jury subpoenas to intimidate them.

"So let me speak clearly and directly to anyone thinking about helping them. If you interfere with our voters, you will be prosecuted with a felony.

"If you tamper with our ballots, you will face justice. It doesn't matter who gave the order. Meddle in California's election and California will come for you.

"And don't count on a pardon. The president can't pardon you out of California justice. Two months ago, I signed a law giving our state prosecutors new tools to make sure of that.

"Look, we saw this coming. We passed 13 election protection bills. We sent $40 million to counties to hire staff and count ballots faster.

"Our election security task force, they're on watch. They're watching for misinformation and threats at the polls. And just this past week, we took the administration to court.

"We took them to court three times and we won all three. And tomorrow, 135 lawyers will be on standby across the state and more than a thousand volunteers will be watching.

"And to our election workers, thank you. The threats against you are a disgrace and we have your back.

"California is ready. Every eligible vote will be counted. So don't let anyone scare you out of your voice. Get out there and vote."
