A resident of Glencullen in the Dublin Mountains has said the ‘absolutely terrifying’ wildfires in the area have left them "exhausted". 

Over the bank holiday, firefighters battled the blaze which erupted the previous weekend. 

On Lunchtime Live, local resident Antoinette said on Friday the flames began to creep towards her home. 

“The gorse all caught and it was just terrifying here - I even had firemen here at half four in the morning,” she described. 

“So, it's been an awful few days for us with neighbours - absolutely terrified.

“Some had to get out of their homes; the fire actually burnt down to the road at one stage, the roads have to be closed.”

On Sunday, Antoinette went to bed hoping for some respite. However, she was woken at four in the morning by a neighbour that the flames had got bigger. 

“Now, in fairness, the firemen arrived - I can say nothing but good things about them, those poor men have been absolutely battling this,” she said. 

“They've been constantly here, but unfortunately for them, there is no access for them to get their trucks up on the hill.”

After more than a week, Antoinette said she is “exhausted” and that her elderly mother is especially worried. 

“You get no sleep,” she said. 

“My mum is 90, God love her, the other day she had a little bag packed with her passport and she said to me, ‘My will is in it, we'll be back. 

“Like to have to do that is absolutely shameful.”
