Party leaders took so long to reach deal there's now a 'manufactured crisis' - Ó Cuív

The pressure on Fianna Fáil party members to back the programme for government is 'a manufactured crisis', according to the party's TD Éamon Ó Cuív.

He has confirmed he will "absolutely" oppose the deal and questioned why it took so long for the leaders of the three parties to strike a deal.

Earlier, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said there would be a political crisis if the memberships of each party didn't back the programme.

Meanwhile, a Green Party TD that refused to back the proposed government deal last night has said he wants to hear from members before deciding.

There have been three more coronavirus-related deaths in the Republic.

14 new cases of the virus have also been confirmed today.

It brings the total number of cases to 25,334, while the number of deaths now stands at 1,709.

75-year-old James O'Reilly of Ballynonty, Thurles in Co Tipperary was jailed for 20 years on Monday for the repeated rape and sexual abuse of his seven daughters and his younger sister.

An Irish cancer survivor has said the shutdown in non-COVID health care is “just petrifying” for patients.

28-year-old Aoife Rafter completed radiotherapy in January; however, she has had no scans since.

On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, she said she has been given no indication when her scans and tests will resume.

The past few months have been an 'utter nightmare' for artists and arts organisations, according to opera singer Gavan Ring.

He has welcomed the announcement of a new stimulus package for the sector, but says it could have come sooner.

He was speaking after the Government today confirmed €25 million in extra funding will be provided to the arts.
