President Donald Trump met with Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park and shared his views on a united Ireland.

Ahead of his journey to Co Clare for the Irish Open, President Donald Trump met with President Catherine Connolly at Áras an Uchtaráin and with Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Farmleigh House.

Newstalk's Sean Dafoe was at Farmleigh House for the meeting and told The Pat Kenny Show that one question posed to Donald Trump was about his views on a united Ireland, to which he shared he is in favour of.

Dafoe shared: "They did a brief press conference, probably about 20 minutes. I think the most extraordinary thing that he said, certainly not on any one's bingo card, was he said that he was in favour of a united Ireland and that it should happen now.

"His exact quote being that it's going to happen eventually, why not do it now? It would be a feather in everyone's cap, but that, obviously, the British would have something to say about that, which I quite imagine they will."

Footage shared from the meeting shows Donald Trump saying: "Well, I don't want to cause any problems, but I will tell you I would love to see it unified.

"I have friends on both sides, great people. They're Irish people. How can they be bad, right? I'd love to see it unified. I think it would be a great feather in everybody's cap if that happened.

It's going to happen eventually. You know, the way I look at it, it's going to happen eventually. We're talking about it [gestures to Taoiseach Micheál Martin] and you've got the right man over here to get it moving.

"I think it would be a fantastic thing. Now the UK will have something to say about it, obviously, but I think it would be a great thing. I mean, how could it be bad?"
