There was something of a mirror image in last night's match between Manchester United and Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Sixteen years ago, Ryan Giggs's mazy run and rifled finish gave United a famous 2-1 win over the same opposition and in the same competition.

Last night, Giggs was seated on the bench alongside manager Louis van Gaal as another homegrown hero, Danny Welbeck, found the net.

Unfortunately, for United, it was for Arsenal as the Gunners left Old Trafford with a 2-1 win.

Giggs and his feelings towards Van Gaal have been under scrutiny of late and United We Stand editor Andy Mitten believes any issues have been over-blown having spoken to Giggs in the past week as he told Off The Ball tonight.

"I spoke to Ryan and I understand he's got a good relationship [with Van Gaal]. They both speak very well of each other all the time. They need each other," said Mitten.

"Van Gaal needs Giggs in so much as Giggs knows far more about the people in English football than he does. He knows where are the tricky away grounds, he knows the history at clubs, he knows the players in the dressing room better than he does so Van Gaal can soak that knowledge up. And Ryan Giggs needs Van Gaal because he's not ready to be a manager."

Mitten also went on to discuss the problems surrounding Angel Di Maria, as well as Falcao having to line out with the club's U21s and whether there is still faith that Van Gaal can turn the current situation around.
