The names of the deceased have not yet been released, but they are survived by two teenage children. 

On Newstalk Breakfast, Spain-based journalist Simon Hunter described it as a “very sensitive story”. 

“Reporters in the Spanish media are speaking to sources from the investigation and are getting information,” he said. 

“What we know is that it was a 50-year-old man and his 45-year-old wife who was an Irish national, they were found dead in the jacuzzi of their holiday home that they had rented in the Cap Blanc area of Cullera on Spain's Valencia coast. 

“It was the two children who were aged 14 and 15 who discovered their parents' bodies around 5 o'clock on Tuesday evening. 

“From then, really, we don't know exactly what has happened to them.”

Although local officials remain tight lipped about how the couple might have died, Spanish media have reported there is at least one line of enquiry that police are pursuing. 

“There's a very interesting report this morning in the El País newspaper which is suggesting that there may have been some kind of bizarre accident involving the jacuzzi,” Mr Hunter continued. 

“Some kind of mechanical failure because initial reports suggested that it could have been a violent death, that both of the couple were found with cuts or scratches or some kind of piercing injury.

“But the theory that the El País is reporting is that one partner may have been injured while trying to pull the other person out of the water of the jacuzzi. 

“So, we don't know yet if there's any connection with the deaths, but this is clearly one of the things that the investigators are looking at.”

Support for the couple's children

Neither of the couple’s children speak Spanish and have been offered psychological support by the Red Cross. 

“Three relatives flew in overnight from Ireland, they arrived in Alicante at around 3am on Wednesday morning,” Mr Hunter said. 

“The town hall even sent a taxi to pick them up from the airport, arranged a hotel.”

Autopsies have been performed on both of the couple’s bodies.
