The Mercedes F1 team has taken disciplinary action against Nico Rosberg after he admitted being responsible for a collision between he and team-mate Lewis Hamilton during last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton was left with a puncture, which ultimately led to his retirement from the race.

The German has apologised to Hamilton for what is being termed "an error of judgement".

In a statement on his Facebook page, the current championship leader said: "In the days since the Grand Prix of Belgium at Spa I spent A lot of time, to think about what happened during the race. Me too have discussed this with the team.

"I brought already expressed my regret about the incident. After I today met with Toto [Wolff], Paddy [Lowe] and Lewis, I want to go one step further and described the incident as a misjudgment on my part.

The Supreme rule of our team is that we do not collide. But exactly what happened.

"For this error in judgment, I want to apologize to the team and Lewis. I'm also sorry for the fans who were brought into Belgium to our battle for the lead.

"Clear instructions were given Lewis and me, as we have to go against each other.

"As a driver, we have a clear responsibility for the team, the fans of our sport, our partners, and Mercedes-Benz to show clean racing. We take this responsibility very much seriously."

Earlier this week on Off The Ball, former Jordan team boss Eddie Jordan told us that Mercedes' handling of the tension between the two drivers had been "weak" thus far.
