Roy Hodgson has admitted the English FA are keeping a close eye on Manchester United’s young Belgian star Adnan Junuzaj, with the possibility of the 18 year old someday lining out for the English international side.
Junuzaj scored twice on his full debut last night as his goals brought United back from 1-0 down away to Sunderland. On last night’s Match of the Day Hodgson admitted the FA were watching the player with a view to possibly bringing him into the English national side set-up through naturalisation.
"There's no doubt that he's a real talent and we have our eyes on him but a lot will have to be discussed," said Hodgson.
"He's been with United for a long period of time and of course that discussion will have to be seriously debated before we start naturalising players.” Hodgson added.
Due to the amount of time the Belgium born player has lived in the United Kingdom he could eventually qualify for the English national side.
"Yes [he could play for England] down the line if he becomes naturalised or if he becomes a homegrown product," Hodgson said.
Junuzaj was born in Belgium to Kosovar-Albanian parents and is eligible to represent four nations; Belgium, Albania, Serbia and Turkey. Junuzaj has turned down repeated underage international call ups for Belgium as he takes time to decide on his international future. The player’s family and friends have reportedly been urging him to select Albania as his international side.
David Moyes also spoke of the possibility of the Junuzaj representing England, saying:
"Yes. There is some way he has a chance of qualifying for England through residency.
"I think he's got a choice of countries to play for. He's got probably three or four different countries he could choose to play for.
"Obviously, he has been called up by Belgium several times and chosen not to at the moment, and he's wanted by, I think, Albania, Croatia and a few others as well.”
Moyes compared the young player’s ability to that of Wayne Rooney, who he brought through from the Everton youth ranks to the first team.
"I gave Wayne Rooney and Ross Barkley their debuts at Everton and he is certainly in their category too.
"He is someone who we think a lot of and I have tried to get him in the team over the last few weeks but for various reasons it did not happen.
"He is a really good player, he can do most things and play in lots of different positions."
