One well-known Irish-American Democrat says he believes Joe Biden can win the US presidential election.

The Mayor of the city of Boston, Marty Walsh, told Newstalk Breakfast he is hopeful as counting continues.

But he said it could be a while before results are clear.

"I think we all knew it was going to take time to count the votes.

"We know that the results, we could probably have them as early as tomorrow.

"The issue we have here obviously is the same as Ireland with the coronavirus - we've had to change our voting to have mail-in voting, we had early votes as well for presidential elections here in Boston and around the country and then people showed up at the polls.

"So there's still millions of ballots that still need to be counted.

"There's at least eight states right now that are still in contention.

"So it's going to be a long road here.

"But as I've said all along the way, and Joe Biden said all along the way, it's not my place or his place or Donald Trump's place to declare the results of an election.

"The American people, and we need to make sure that we get every single vote counted."

On Mr Trump's rhetoric, he said: "An election for president is an important election in our country, or in any country, for that matter.

"And Donald Trump, I wish he would be respectful of the position of president.

"He hasn't been his entire time, and I think that a lot of people took time out of their day or made efforts to vote.

"And I think we need to make sure that every vote gets counted."

On the minority vote, Mayor Walsh said it is still early - but indications are looking good for Mr Biden.

"We don't know yet as far as the vote, we'll be able to analyse that afterwards.

"I think that there's a lot of the Latino community, the African-American community has certainly worked and voted hard for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in this election.

"We're seeing it in the early votes, we're seeing a lot of the votes that haven't been counted yet.

"I think we'll be able to really dissect that after the election is over and see where the votes came from.

"But right now, we're seeing in a lot of urban areas in the city in across the country people coming on big numbers for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris."

Asked if he thinks Mr Biden will win, he said: "I am...There's definitely a pathway".

Early indications are that the polls have been proved wrong in many cases, with several swing states showing strong support for Donald Trump.

Despite that, Joe Biden looks as though he has gained Arizona - a state that has been Republican for many years.

The election is still too close to call, but both Mr Trump and Mr Biden have asserted wins as counting continues.

Mr Trump tweeted that he has had 'a big win', while Mr Biden said 'we're gonna win this'.

Mr Biden also told supporters in a live television address to remain patient for an election result, he added: "We believe we're on track to win this election."

Moments later a bullish Mr Trump insisted his campaign was ahead, tweeting: "We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election.

"We will never let them do it. Votes cannot be cast after the Poles (sic) are closed!"

The spelling mistake was later corrected and Mr Trump reposted the tweet, which was then flagged by Twitter as being 'disputed' and potentially misleading.
