A Fianna Fáil MEP has demanded a €5 levy on Shein fashion packages, citing human rights and environmental concerns.
The Chinese fashion line sells cheap clothing to millions around the world but critics claim it is immoral to buy from the company.
On Lunchtime Live, Dublin MEP Barry Andrew noted Shien is under investigation for “any number of infractions”.
“You can start with the environment; the damage that fast fashion - and Shein in particular - does to the environment is extraordinary,” he argued.
“There’s even an investigation into forced labour in their supply chain.
“There are issues around copyright infringement - Irish fashion designers will be very sensitive to that issue.”

While he acknowledged that the cost of living crisis means many people appreciate cheap prices, he still believes the overall record of the company means it is “very hard to defend”.
“I think there should be a €5 levy on parcels coming from Shein - on the package” he continued.
“So already, the European Union are proposing a €2 levy and they’re basing that on the fact that the European Customs officials have handled 4.6 billion parcels coming from China a year.
“They want to raise this levy to cover the costs of handling all of this customs.
“I really think this might help to cover the cost of customs but it’s not going to change people’s behaviour.”
Mr Andrews said a €5 levy would encourage people to make “responsible” choices when shopping.
