Cinema operators want the Government to name a date for the reopening of the sector.

Those who run both indoor and drive-in venues are expressing frustration at the lack of clarity.

Earlier this week, the operators of a Dublin drive in-cinema said they were left in limbo after they were told reopening was a breach of the current COVID-19 guidelines.

Minister of State Josepha Madigan said she was "completely confused" that outdoor cinemas weren't allowed reopen.

The site will remain closed this weekend, with organisers still hoping they'll be able to run screenings next weekend.

Meanwhile, indoor cinema owners also want to know when they'll be allowed to open the doors and turn the projectors back on.

Cinemas in the UK reopened earlier this week, and several previously delayed blockbusters - including A Quiet Place Part II and Fast and Furious 9 - are due out in June as release schedules gradually return to normal after a year of disruption.

Director of Omniplex Cinema Group Mark Anderson told Lunchtime Live that Ireland is out of step with other European countries.

He said: “We’re in a situation where 80% of cinemas in the EU and UK have announced reopening dates for May.

"Ireland is in the 20% cohort of countries like Estonia and Malta that haven’t dealt with the reopening of indoor cinemas.

"It’s really time now for a decision to be made.”

Mr Anderson said it's not viable in the long-term for cinemas to operate at 25% of normal capacity due to social distancing rules.

However, he said the important thing is to open first of all, and social distancing issues can be dealt with "when the time is right".

He said: “The cinema industry has worked with Minister Catherine Martin and her department throughout the pandemic, right back to last year.

"We’ve developed strict guidelines for the operation of safe cinemas.

“We’ve written to the Taoiseach today to call on him to announce an opening date."

Last month, the Government's website briefly announced June 7th as a reopening date for cinemas.

However, that was swiftly changed to simply say work would get underway on the "preparation for the safe reopening of cinemas and theatres in June subject to public health advice".

Earlier this week, the Taoiseach indicated a plan for reopening the entertainment sector would be revealed next week.
