Opening your attic door is a simple way to keep your house cool during the heat, the owner of an A rated home has revealed.
Lunchtime Live listener Anne said her property can get “very hot” during the summer and her family has had to “learn a few tricks along the way”.
“Our house was sitting around 25 degrees yesterday,” she recalled.
“If you've got the windows open all day and the sun is blaring into that kind of double glazed glass, it's just really going to heat up and it's just going to stay in there because they're so well insulated.
“I definitely would say try and keep the sun out if you can, because it will make a little bit of a difference.”
However, they have learnt that there is one thing that really does help cool their home.
“We got a great tip from a neighbour a couple of years ago and that's just to open the attic door,” she said.
“That will let all of the kind of really warm air out to the top of the house.
“We have our attic converted, so we just keep the window open all the time in the attic just to try and cool it down.”
Long-term, Anne feels that they might have to install an aircon system in the property.
“If things continue like this in the summers, maybe we'll start to have to think about air-con or different measures to kind of cool our houses down,” she said.
“Things you never thought about in Ireland.”
