Dublin’s Lord Mayor Hazel Chu has confirmed her bid for a Dáil seat in the upcoming by-election.

The Green Party chairperson this morning said she would seek the party’s nomination to run in the Dublin Bay South by-election.

The eleciton, triggered by the resignation of Fine Gaels former housing minister Eoghan Murphy, will be held before the winter.

Cllr Chu will go head-to-head with fellow Green Party councillor Claire Byrne for the right to fight the election.

She told Newstalk she aims to ensure there is diversity on the ticket.

“I also think I have a better chance of bringing in a better vote for the party,” she said.

“In my position as Lord Mayor and also my previous vote share of 33% in my ward, I think I stand a high chance of bringing in a good vote.

“That is not supposed to sound arrogant or anything, it is just I work off the numbers and I work off polling.”

The move comes just weeks after Cllr Chu’s failed bid to win a seat in the Seanad.

She failed to win the backing of her party to run for the seat and eventually gathered the least votes in the election.

In a statement this morning, she said she has no plans to run as an independent or for any other party.
