A haulier has said the industry feels like it is “getting nothing, really” from the Government, after the announcement of a new package of measures to cut the cost of transport.

Following days of fuel protests, the Government cut excise duty by a further 10 cents, as well as the establishment of a new Road Transporters Support Scheme.

The new programme will provide hauliers with direct payments to offset the significant increase in their fuel costs.

On Lunchtime Live, Wexford-based haulier James said he believes the industry is “getting nothing, really”

“It wouldn't wet the inside of a tank on a lorry,” he complained.

“It's not just about the haulage industry, it's about everybody.

“I'm sure you'll put diesel or petrol in your car as well and I'm sure you've noticed the difference.

“It's for everyone; this was never about just the hauliers or the farmers or the fishermen.”

James added that he is “quite proud” of everyone who joined the protests last week and thanked the public for their support.

“There wasn't a cross word,” he said.

“While I'm here, I want to commend the Gardaí in Gorey.

“Them lads could not have been better to us; they're accredited for uniform, they're a credit to the people of Gorey.”
