A union representing civil servants has called for more working from home because of the fuel crisis.

Fórsa recently surveyed its members, of whom 65% responded that they work in the office three days a week, while one quarter work full time.

On Lunchtime Live, Fórsa spokesperson Niall Shanahan said more working from home would cut costs for hard pressed commuters.

“If we were, for example, to increase the number of remote working days by one, it would immediately reduce peak hour fuel demand,” he argued.

Mr Shanahan added that more a policy of more working from home could be implemented “more or less overnight” and not cost the taxpayer anything.

“It comes at no additional cost to the employer and it has no impact on productivity,” he said.

“In fact, all productivity surveys would suggest that if anything, productivity is higher when people are given the option to work remotely.”
