Weather warnings remain in place as night temperatures set to fall

Drivers are being warned to take extra care as heavy snow is forecast for many counties in the north-west.

A status orange snow and ice warning remains in place for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Meanwhile, a yellow warning is in place for Longford, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway and Roscommon.

Both warnings are in place until midday Friday.

Strong Irish showing for 2016 Academy Awards

President Michael D Higgins is leading the congratulations to what is being billed as a triumph for Irish film at the 2016 Academy Awards.

Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender feature among the Irish nominees.

"I am delighted to send my warmest congratulations to the Irish nominees on the occasion of the unprecedented strong Irish representation at the Oscars 2016", President Higgins said.

Cork teen contacts gardaí after edited photos of her found on porn website

A young woman from Co Cork says she was horrified to find her pictures were taken from Facebook and posted and edited on a porn website.

19-year-old Katie Kirwan says photos of her when she was 14 were taken without her permission and used on a porn site.

Threatening and offensive comments were posted on the photos, which have been viewed more than one million times.

Tributes paid to Alan Rickman, who has died aged 69

British actor Alan Rickman, famous for roles in films such as Harry Potter and Love Actually, has died at the age of 69, his family has said.

The star won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award in a career which began in the late 1970s. 

However, he shot to stardom in 1988 when he played Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis's adversary, in 'Die Hard'.
