Producer
Newstalk is inviting expressions of interest for the role of Producer.
We have some future opportunities across the schedule, both fixed term and full time, in our FM and podcasting teams.
Our shows cover both magazine and current affairs programmes, with a breadth of content spanning news, features, niche content, entertainment, culture, sport, lifestyle, and human interest.
This is an exciting opportunity for experienced and creative content professionals who understand how to turn strong ideas into compelling radio and audio. The successful candidates will combine sound editorial judgement with excellent organisational skills, supporting the delivery of engaging, relevant and high-quality programming for Newstalk audiences.
About the Role
Working closely with presenters, researchers, contributors and the wider production team, the Producer will help shape editorial direction of the programme and manage its delivery.
Responsibilities will include:
- Developing original programme ideas, treatments and features that reflect audience interests
- Selecting stories and angles that are timely, relevant and compelling
- Planning running orders and adapting them as stories or production requirements change
- Researching topics and identifying, booking and briefing suitable contributors
- Writing clear, engaging and audience-appropriate scripts
- Producing live and pre-recorded programme content
- Managing programme timing, pacing, transitions and contributor coordination
- Editing audio and preparing polished material for broadcast and digital publication
- Ensuring content meets Newstalk’s editorial, legal, ethical and technical standards
- Working with colleagues across editorial, production, digital and technical teams
- Using audience insight and feedback to strengthen content and identify new opportunities
- Contributing ideas for digital, social and on-demand treatment of programme content
About you
We are interested in hearing from candidates who can demonstrate:
- Strong editorial judgement and a thorough understanding of current affairs
- The ability to develop distinctive ideas and turn them into deliverable programme content
- Experience producing engaging live or pre-recorded audio
- Excellent research, writing, communication and contributor-management skills
- Confidence working in a fast-moving production environment and responding calmly to change
- A strong understanding of audience needs and the Newstalk brand
- Sound awareness of media law, editorial standards, accuracy, fairness and responsible journalism
- Proficiency in audio editing and digital production tools
- The ability to collaborate effectively with presenters and colleagues across different disciplines
- An inclusive approach to content, contributors and the range of perspectives represented on air
- The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work to deadline
