Varadkar says May 2020 "is the right moment" for the next General Election

The Taoiseach has said he believes the next General election should be held in May next year.

Leo Varadkar set out his preferred timetable in a speech at the Fine Gael think-in in County Cork this afternoon.

He said the meeting is to be the last of this Dáil session.

Two people charged in connection with the death of Paul Jones

A second person arrested by Gardaí investigating the murder of Paul Jones in Cork city has been charged with a burglary offence.

The man's sister - 52-year-old Helen Jones - was brought before Cork District Court this evening while 41-year-old Keith O'Hara was in court this morning.

Helen Jones and Keith O'Hara - both with an address at Cahergal Avenue, Mayfield - were arrested by Gardaí investigating the murder of the 55-year-old who was found dead in his home on the Bandon Road last Saturday.

Flight diverted to Shannon Airport after coffee spill in cockpit

It's emerged a flight from Germany to Mexico was forced to divert to Shannon Airport - after the pilot spilt coffee in the cockpit.

An accident report has revealed the hot drink damaged an audio control panel, causing an electrical burning smell and smoke.

It happened as the flight was above the Atlantic while it was travelling from Frankfurt airport to Cancun on February 6th.

Yellowhammer document predicts protests, smuggling and "direct action" at the border

A UK government document outlining the potential impact of a no-deal Brexit warns that Downing Street’s plans avoid a hard border in Ireland are “unsustainable.”

The Operation Yellowhammer document, officially released last night, warns that no-deal could lead to shortages of food and medicine across the UK as well as queues at ports and "significant" rises in electricity prices.

In the North, the British government expects businesses to be forced to close due to severe trade disruption on goods crossing the border.

Water vapour found on planet in habitable zone for the first time

Water vapour has been found in the atmosphere of a planet within a habitable zone for the first time.

Data from the ESA/NASA Hubble Space Telescope made the discovery on K2-18b.

The planet is eight times the mass of Earth.
