Harris says review into National Maternity Hospital abortion "warranted"

Health Minister Simon Harris has said an external review "is warranted" into an abortion carried out at the National Maternity Hospital.

It is reported the woman involved in the case underwent tests which can identify an abnormality that can lead to Edwards' Syndrome.

That is where the baby is often born small and with heart defects.

Three tests were carried out.

While the first two indicated Edward’s Syndrome, the third found the unborn baby did not have the genetic disorder.

Varadkar – breakdown of UK Brexit talks a “very serious development”

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said the breakdown of Brexit talks in the UK is a "very serious development".

However, he still believes it is possible the withdrawal agreement will be passed by parliament.

His comments come after the UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told Prime Minister Theresa May that Brexit talks have gone 'as far as they can'.

Recent weeks have seen Labour and the Conservative government attempting to find a compromise to get Mrs May's withdrawal agreement through parliament.

Hospitals and health care facilities facing strike action

Hospitals and healthcare facilities around the country are facing the prospect of strikes from next month.

Thousands of hospital support staff overwhelmingly voted in favour of industrial action this morning.

The workers involved include health care assistants, lab aids, hospital theatre workers, porters and cleaners.

Separately, healthcare industry chefs have also voted overwhelmingly in favour of the strike action.

Teenager stabbed in south Dublin park laid to rest

The funeral has taken place of Azzam Raguragui in Dublin.

The 18-year-old was killed after being stabbed in a south Dublin park last week.

His family and friends gathered for the service at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Dublin on Friday.

He was later laid to rest in Newcastle Cemetery.

Victims remembered on 45th anniversary of Dublin-Monaghan bombings

The Minister for Justice has laid a wreath in memory of the 33 people who were killed and hundreds who were injured in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

Charlie Flanagan joined victim’s families and survivors at the memorial in Dublin on the 45th anniversary of atrocities this afternoon.

Thirty three people were killed and 300 others injured when four loyalist bombs exploded in Dublin and Monaghan on the 17th May 1974.

No one has ever been arrested in relation to the attacks – and the victim’s families have long been campaigning for justice.
