The customer-facing video cameras at Dunnes’ self service checkout has been described as “creepy, unsettling and dystopian in the extreme”, by one furious shopper.
Whenever a customer now uses the self service checkout, a camera records them as they check out their items.
This video stream can be viewed by the customer on the top right hand corner of the self service checkout.
“This is creepy, unsettling and dystopian in the extreme,” customer John Ryder complained to Lunchtime Live.
“I only encountered it the other day and I spoke to a supervisor and they said the supervisor was creeped out by it.
“The staff are creeped out and they’re getting calls from customers who are creeped out.”
Mr Ryder added that the camera was like “having someone at your shoulder, looking at you doing your shopping because you’re a thief”.
All in all, it raises wider issues about how society has “slowly given away our freedom”.
Dunnes has been contacted for comment.
