Some 11,800 personal current accounts have been opened each week so far this year.

That's according to the latest data from the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI).

Figures show some 365,000 accounts have been opened to date in 2022.

Brian Hayes is chief executive of BPFI.

He said there's still a lot to do ahead of the imminent closure of Ulster Bank and KBC.

"We've a big job of work to do - we're at, not just the start of that process, but getting close to the middle of that process.

"And between now and next August, another 12 months, we've got to find a home for about 450,000 personal account customers.

"So a lot done, more to do.

"And we certainly believe that the website that we've put in place on behalf of the industry - movingaccount.ie - gives customers really good advice on a step-by-step guide basis about how they go about opening a new account, or indeed switching their account".
