Jet2’s call for an international database of disruptive passengers “wouldn’t work”, a former air hostess has argued.

The company has called for the register after a video went viral of a passenger shouting “I’m ready! I’m ready now! I need this! I’m Irish” at its staff.

However, on Lunchtime Live, Marisa Mackle said there are a number of problems to consider beforehand.

“Say, like an 18-year-old heading off to Ibiza and gets pretty drunk - and I've seen that quite a lot - but then they grow up,” she said.

“They want to fly with their family, they're going to a funeral and their name is on the database and they can't fly anywhere - it just wouldn't work.

“The airlines cannot police people; that's for the courts, for the police.”

Ms Mackle said staff working at the airport need to be more proactive making sure drunk passengers do not board.

“The check-in staff, the people who are weighing bags and everything really need to concentrate more on the type of people they're letting on the plane,” she argued.

“Because a lot of passengers who cause trouble, they were already inebriated before they got on the flight and I used to feel that the check-in staff or the ground staff used to just try and get them on the flight to get rid of them.”
