In a 25-minute-long speech on Thursday, US President Donald Trump claimed that China “carried out… the largest compromise of election data in history” during the 2020 US Presidential Election
His claims, which are unsubstantiated, were included among pleas for lawmakers to pass the Save America Act, which has been criticised by Democrats as “voter suppression.”
Trump also claimed that was “winning” in their 4-and-a-half-month war with Iran, and had “won” in Venezuela – alluding to the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.
On The Pat Keny Show, Caroline Vakil, campaign reporter at The Hill, said that Trump’s “fascination and obsession” with the 2020 election, where he lost to Joe Biden, was evident.
Democrats are “mocking” the speech, according to Ms. Vakil, who say this is an attempt to undermine faith in US elections. They believe Trump’s speech will impact November’s midterm elections rather than the 2028 Presidential election.
Despite numerous attempts, Ms. Vakil confirmed that the Federal Government cannot organise individual states’ election as state’s are mandated to carry out their own elections.
She highlighted the irony of these attempts, as Republicans have traditionally “been against sort of a centralized government.”
‘He’s trying to save Truth Social’
Trump Media has announced that it will sell early access to social media posts, which Ms. Vakil sees as a way to help investors with trading. This is “another way to financially profit” and is “very unusual.”
Trump is “such a unique figure” that many things which would have been faux paus for a President are “another news of the day” in this administration.
America's midterm elections
Corruption is a “focal point” of Republican messaging ahead of the November mid-term elections, while fraud is another party “talking point,” according to MS. Vakil
Democrats, however, are suggesting that Trump is using the “lever of power to change the outcome of elections.”
