The first round got underway at the 2014 Wimbeldon Championships at the All England Lawn-Tennis Club yesterday, starting off with clear skies and temperatures in the mid-20s.
Andy Murray opened against David Goffin of Belgium on Centre Court and had no trouble winning in straight sets.(6-1 6-4 7-5)
"Each year I've played at Wimbledon, I've got better. It's been slow but steady progress," he said afterwards. "Obviously it's going to be tough to top winning the tournament but, if I can play like I did last year, I'll definitely be in with a chance."
Murray came out onto the grass surface looking right at home on Centre Court. He will move on to the next round and play Blaz Rola from Slovenia.
World No.1 Novak Djokovic defeated Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan in straight sets. (6-0 6-1 6-4) Djokovic won the tournament in 2011 and lost to Andy Murray last year in the finals and he will play Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic.
Tomas Berdych (No.6) will proceed to the next round after beating Victor Hanescu. Berdych was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2010 and is a player that should not be underestimated. He will go on to play Bernard Tomic in the next round.
World No.7 David Ferrer defeated his first opponent, fellow countryman Pablo Carreno Busta from Spain. Ferrer will move on to the next round and play either Daniel Evans or Andrey Kuznetsov.
World No. 2 Li Na proved herself once again as she beat Paula Kania of Poland in straight sets during her first round of play. Na won the Australian Open in January and has made it to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2006, 2010, and 2013. Na will play Yvonne Meusburger from Austria in the next round.
Two time semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka (No.8) will move on to the second round of Wimbledon after defeating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, going on to face Bojana Jovanovski in the Round 2.
Former US Open champion Sam Stosur of Australia and American Sloane Stephens were both knocked out of the first round in the day's big shocks. But Venus Williams won her first match of the tournament and will move on to the second round despite a recovering back injury.
