On February 22nd, 1837, the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, wheeled a massive 634kg cheddar into the halls of the White House in Washington, opening the doors of the First Residence to the people. Citizens were invited to come in, take a slice, and discuss the issues of the day with the president and his staff.
Now for the second year, President Obama will be honouring the traditions, albeit with the cheddar replaced by cookies – the entire event will be held online. And who better to rope in to publicise it than the cast of The West Wing.

The Big Block of Cheese Day became a popular subplot in the White House-based political drama The West Wing, where it was referenced in two episodes in the first two seasons of the show. This year’s Big Block of Cheese Day will take place on January 21st.
