Tiger Woods has released a statement that is welcome news following his worrying car accident in Los Angeles yesterday.

Woods has undergone surgery on his lower right leg and right ankle following the single-car collision. He was the sole occupant of the SUV which he was driving.

The 15-time major champion has suffered fractures affecting the upper portions of the tibia and fibula bones.

The injuries are certain to rule Woods out of competitive golf for the foreseeable future.

The statement from Woods' foundation thanks 'everyone for the overwhelming support and messages during this tough time'.

It added that Woods is 'currently awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room'. Woods has thanked the wonderful doctors and hospital staff at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Fire Department for their 'outstanding' support and assistance.

The first LAPD officer on the scene, Carlos Gonzales, said Woods was lucky to survive.

"As a deputy who is traffic trained and works a traffic car, I have seen many collisions. The nature of his vehicle, the fact he was wearing a seatbelt, I would say that it greatly increased the likelihood that it saved his life. It's very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive."
