A fantastic strike from Aiden McGeady in the dying minutes in Tblisi has secured Ireland the ideal start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

The Everton winger gave Martin O'Neill's side the lead midway through the first half, only for Tornike Okriashvili to equalise with a stunning effort that careened into the top corner of David Forde’s goal with the keeper rooted to the spot.

The O’Neill and Keane era looked set to get off to an imperfect start until McGeady took the ball with consummate skill on the edge of the Georgian area before placing it past the keeper from the edge of the area. McGeady's late strike means Ireland begin Group D with a 2-1 win and maximum points.

In the other Group D games this evening, Scotland face world champions Germany in Dortmund.

Meanwhile, Gibraltar's first ever competitive international will be played on the Portuguese Algarve, with Poland their opponents.
