Everton manager Roberto Martinez has played down his decision to substitute Kevin Mirallas at half-time, minutes after the Belgian missed a penalty that would usually have been struck by designated taker Leighton Baines.

Speaking to Sky Sports's Monday Night Football after the disappointing goalless draw against West Brom, Martinez suggested that Mirallas felt confident and that Baines allowed his team-mate to take the kick.

"He was feeling like he could take the penalty and Leighton Baines was quite happy to allow him to do that," he said, stating that the only issue was that the penalty was missed.

Martinez also explained his decision to replace Mirallas at half-time.

"He was feeling his hamstring as you could see straight after the penalty," he said.
