Aston Villa have beaten local rivals Birmingham City 1-0 in tonight's Capital One Cup third round tie.

The half-time introduction of Jack Grealish helped inspire Villa to a vastly improved second-half performance from the home side and the former Irish underage international was involved in the build-up to the header by Rudy Gestede which produced the only goal of the game.

Manchester City are also through to the next round after a 4-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

City scored all four of their goals during a rampant first-half against their hosts with Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling scoring, while Vito Mannone scored an OG.

Sunderland's goal came in the final 10 minutes through Ola Toivonen.

Hull City have produced one of the upsets of the night after Irish international David Meyler got the only goal of the game in their 1-0 win over Swansea.

Stoke were 1-0 winners over their hosts, Fulham while Middlesbrough thrashed Wolves 3-0.

In the late kick-off, Everton came from a goal down to beat their hosts Reading by 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium with goals from Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu proving crucial.
