Cambuur Leeuwarden are through to the semi-final of the Dutch cup, and while the story of the second tier team making it through is a great one on its own, their journey will likely go down in the record books for a different reason. 

Cambuur overcame Ajax in the KNVB Cup round of 16, before taking on FC Utrecht in the quarter-final on Wednesday. 

The game finished 2-2 after extra-time, before Cambuur eventually won the tie on penalties, but it was a spot kick awarded in regulation time that has drawn attention to the game.

Referee Pol van Boekel awarded a penalty against Cambuur, which would have given Utrecht a great chance to take the lead on the night. The ball had been lofted into the box and he had blown for a handball.

However, after an on-field review using video technology, Van Boekel decided to reverse his decision and award a free out instead.

This isn't the first time that video technology has been used, however. Referee Viktor Kassai turned to the new technology in the Club World Cup to award a penalty to Kashima Antlers.

AZ Alkmaar will be Cambuur's opponents in the semi-final, as they look to continue their amazing run. According to NRC.nl, the closest the club have come to this stage previously was when the VV Leeuwarden, who eventually became Cambuur, made the semi-finals in 1961.
