The head of world cycling's governing body believes his sport is helping to lead the way in cutting out doping.

UCI president Brian Cookson was reacting to the results of a report by the Cycling Independent Reform Commission [CIRC].

One interviewee claimed 90 per cent of the peloton still cheat - with others guessing much less than that.

Cookson believes recent scandals involving professional cyclists and the UCI are a thing of the past.

"There are always new methods and new ways that people find of trying to evade the tests and reduce the impact," said Cookson.

"We're working with the national anti-doping agencies and WADA a lot more effectively.

"We will not cover up doping as was obviously the case in the past."
