Read: 5 of the best Bill Murray stories
The exploits of Bill Murray are near legendary (as you can see below) and he’s recently added another to his bow – with a story about him driving a cab, while the cabbie played a saxophone in the back seat.
The Toronto Film Festival proclaimed Friday ‘Bill Murray Day’, and to mark the event the man himself took part in a Q & A session with fans.
Wearing red pants and a plaid shirt, Murray told fans – who had watched ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Groundhog Day’ as part of the Bill Murray Day festivities, that after he saw the early cut of the Ghostbusters, “I knew I was going to be rich and famous, and be able to wear red pants and not give a damn.”
Murray then told the crowd that the night previous he had hopped in a taxi in Oakland, California and ended up in a strange, very Bill Murrayesque situation.
While driving around the driver told Murray he was a saxophone player.
“I said, ‘When do you practice?’ He said, ‘I drive 14 hours a day,’” Murray told the crowd.
Murray then asked: “Well, where’s your sax?” The driver told him the instrument was in the boot of the car, after which Murray told the driver: “Pull over and get in the back, I know how to drive a car.’ ”
So Murray drove around California, while the driver played the sax in the back seat.
“Not only did he play all the way to Sausalito, which is a long way, we stopped and got barbecue. He [wound up] playing in what some would call a sketchy, weird place in Oakland at 2:15 in the morning. I was like, ‘Relax, man, you’ve got the [bleeping] horn! We’re cool!’ And it was great and it made for a beautiful night!”
For fans of Murray, they’ll know this isn’t particularly strange behaviour by his standards, and he has fine previous form. And here we've put together 5 of our favourite Bill Murray moments.
