Radamel Falcao has been linked with most of Europe's top clubs over the last few years, but given Manchester United's troubles, it seemed a little unlikely that he would join the Reds from Monaco.

But that is what has come to pass and it is a signing that has intrigued Pat Nevin, who joined us on Off The Ball as always on a Monday.

"It's very interesting because he's been almost hawked around Europe," said Pat of the strong rumours linking Falcao with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City prior to this United move.

"Why is he going so relatively cheaply? I don't think people are quite sure yet if he's over that injury. This was a top man a year ago, the one everyone on the planet wanted. Then you see him now turning up at Manchester United who are one of the biggest clubs in the world but they're not in Champions League football so big question marks over that one but really exciting for Manchester United fans."

Pat also questioned whether the move for Falcao is what Man United really need given deficiencies in other areas including defence and midfield, although he sees a formidable yet vulnerable team being built.

He also believes Louis Van Gaal is the right man to find the right blend among the attacking talent at his disposal.

Pat also gave his take on the weekend's action and picked out Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge as key men to take Liverpool forward, while he feels Chelsea are well-oiled and that squad harmony will not be an issue under Jose Mourinho.

He also took a slight liking to "wind-up merchant" Diego Costa and heaped praise on Seamus Coleman.

Plus, he picked out how Stoke City used a similar system to Jose Mourinho's tactics against Man City in the 1 - 0 over the Sky Blues.
