An American basketball player is recovering well after one of his eyes popped out of his head during a game in New Zealand.

New Zealand broadcaster Radio Sport  report that Akil Mitchell was quickly ushered off court while playing for New Zealand Breakers in Auckland. The team were playing in an Australian NBL game, when the finger of an opposition player accidentally dislodged his eyeball.

"With the palm of my hand I felt my eyeball on the side of my face," he told the station. "I could still see out of the eye.

"I remember thinking oh man... this is kinda bad, but I actually felt it kind of out of place and that's when I kind of freaked out a little bit.

"I kind of sensed something was wrong and as a reaction I was just kind of sticking my hand up there to feel around and with the palm of my hand, I felt it. I felt my eyeball in the side of my face.

"Once I got in the ambulance they gave me a little pain medicine and some saline drops in my eye and I felt it slide back into place, which is also a really strange feeling."
