Aidan O’Shea will miss the start of Mayo's national league campaign because of an ankle injury picked up playing basketball.

Mayo manager Stephen Rochford confirmed to John Fallon that the former All-Star will miss next Saturday’s opening league clash against Monaghan.

"Aidan suffered an ankle injury which is not as serious as initially thought," he said. "He should return to training with us this week and while he won't make the Monaghan game we are hopeful he will be available for the match against Kerry."

O’Shea suffered an ankle sprain after returning to basketball, playing with EJ’s Sligo All-Stars. He previously lined-out for St Declan’s in Dublin.

The 26-year-old was pictured wearing a 'moon boot' to protect his ankle at the Division One final loss to Neptune on Saturday night at the National Arena.

Mayo face Munster champions Kerry after their opener, before they come up against fellow Connacht side Roscommon.

Rochford's side then take on All-Ireland champions Dublin on March 4.
