Hundreds of people will try and launch a political career in the local elections this month.

Around 2,000 candidates are in the race to fill 941 seats on 31 city and county councils.

Polling day is Friday the 24th of May.

But what prompts someone to make the move into politics?

Newstalk reporter Aideen Finnegan has been on the campaign trail in Dublin.

She’s been following three, first-time candidates on the canvass in the Clontarf ward.
