Billed as the biggest short film festival in the world, Tropfest has awarded its top honour for 2016 to a brilliant stop-motion short named Shiny.

Facing stiff competition from 15 other shorts, the animated film was declared the winner in front of thousands of gathered film fans in Sydney’s Millennial Park on Valentine’s Day. Directed by Spencer Susser, the surprisingly violent and wickedly funny short film tells the story of clothes fighting over something shiny, and caught the attention of the festival’s judging panel, including Mel Gibson and actor Simon Baker.

Susser took home the top prize, which included $10,000 AUD (€6,400), a new camera, a trip to Los Angeles to meet film industry executives, and the competition’s ‘fruit bowl’ trophy.
