A cold day ahead; some icy roads this morning and top afternoon temperatures of only 2 to 6 degrees, with frost lingering in sheltered areas.
Most areas dry this morning with sunny spells but scattered heavy wintry showers will develop through the day with some falls of snow occurring locally later this afternoon and evening.
Weather warnings
There is a Status Orange Snow-ice Warning in place for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.
From midnight last night to midnight tonight, those areas could get snow accumulations of between 4 and 8 cm, with the highest amounts on high ground.
Meanwhile, there is a Status Yellow Snow-ice Warning in place for Longford, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway and Roscommon.
Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 cm possible from midnight last night until midnight on Thursday.
Tonight
Cold and windy tonight with clear spells and scattered sleet and snow showers but many areas will become dry. Lowest air temperatures zero or -1 in blustery northwesterly winds. Some icy patches.
