The Health Minister says that in all likelihood he will be calling in HIQA to investigate the deaths of four babies at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

James Reilly says a report into the infant deaths will still be carried out by the Chief Medical Officer.

Earlier today the parents of one of the babies met a cross party group of TDs and Senators.

They told them nothing less than in independent inquiry by HIQA would satisfy them.

Mark and Roisin Molloy have admitted that they welcomed a private meeting with the Health Minister last weekend and that James Reilly listened.

But they say they want more.

The Taoiseach earlier indicated HIQA may be asked to carry out an inquiry into the deaths.

Enda Kenny was to be briefed by the Health Minister on the matter, and suggested an independent inquiry could be on the cards.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Health Committee, Jerry Buttimer, says everyone being treated in a public hospital needs to be confident about the service they receive.
