A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection to the death of Michael Gaine in County Kerry last year.

The man has been detained for questioning at a Garda Station in Kerry under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The case is being investigated by the Serious Crime Unit Kerry Division and family liaison officers are in touch with Mr Gaine's relatives.

56-year-old Mr Gaine from Kenmare was reported missing on 21st March, triggering a search by Gardaí across his vast farm.

His body was found in May, when partial human remains were discovered on his farm.

On The Claire Byrne Show, Irish Mirror Crime Correspondent Paul Healy described it as a “hugely significant” development in the case.

“Gardaí have been meticulously working on this investigation; it’s coming up to a year since this horrific murder,” he said.

“The Garda National Bureau of Investigation are actively involved in this, as is the Serious Crime Unit in Kerry.

“I understand they’ve taken a lot of witness statements, they have examined extensive CCTV footage.

“They’ve been examining the words and claims that are being made by persons who are of interest in this investigation over the past year or so.

“That has led them to arresting this individual; this is the second time that this person has been arrested in connection with this investigation.”
