The European Parliament has voted to tackle homophobia in Europe. The majority of MEPs backed a report that sets out a roadmap against homophobia and discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.
And speaking from Brussels, Labour MEP Emer Costello is criticising RTE for the recent payment it made to individuals over the 'homophobe' row.
It follows comments from the Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte last week. He called on the public broadcaster to allow a full and free exchange of opinions on matters of public interest.
RTE has come under fire since the Iona Institute claimed it had received damages following comments by Rory O'Neill - better known as drag performer 'Panti' - on the 'Saturday Night Show' recently.
It is understood the State broadcaster paid out €85,000 as part of a defamation settlement.
The story has gained international attention, with outlets like The Huffington Post covering the story. 'Panti' also took to the stage of The Abbey Theatre in Dublin at the weekend to give her take on the incident.
While some big personalities are also getting involved, as TV host Graham Norton and US drag queen RuPaul have been expressing their views.
This is one of the most powerful speeches I've ever heard. Brava @PantiBliss http://t.co/Ny0qOpwbpJ
