With the news that Netflix was bringing back the Stars Hollow massive for four feature-length Gilmore Girls episodes, there has been much speculation over whether Melissa McCarthy, the cast member whose career has seen her rise to stardom and an Oscar nomination in the years since the show wrapped, would return as pratfalling chef Sookie St James. And the bad news for fans is that it looks unlikely.
The show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino confirmed on February 1st that she had not written a part for the Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters star, citing McCarthy’s business, adding that the door was always open for a cameo should scheduling conflicts clear.
“Look, if Melissa is available and had an afternoon free, I’ll writer her a scene,” Sherman-Palladino told TV Line. “Melissa was once of us. If she had a spare moment to run over – even if for just a cameo – we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.”
But yesterday, McCarthy took to Twitter to respond to a fan’s question about whether or not she would be making an appearance in the Netflix reunion, strongly indicating that she had hung up Sookie’s apron for good:
Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!! https://t.co/II2Atug4wx

Netlfix's Gilmore Girls reunion is currently in preproduction and has signed on most of the TV show's principal cast members, including Lauren Graham as Lorelai and Alexis Bledel as Rory.
