A man charged over the country's largest ever crystal meth seizure has been denied bail at the High Court.

Two people have been charged in connection with the discovery of the drugs in Cork worth an estimated €32.8m.

Nathan McDonnell (44) has been charged with possession of drugs worth more than €13,000 for sale or supply at Ballyseedy Garden Centre in Kerry between October 27th, 2023 and February 12th this year.

He along with his co-accused were refused bail at their first District Court hearings in February but were allowed to bring a new application to the High Court.

The court was told his father Michael McDonnell would stand bail for his son and offered €100,000 as a surety.

The barrister for the State said there were objections to bail due to the seriousness of the case and concerns of Mr McDonnell being a flight-risk.

A ruling was delivered today and was denied with the Judge saying the accused had the presumption of innocence but said the €100,000 offered wasn't sufficient and believed no condition would allay Garda concerns.

Mr McDonnell will have his next District Court hearing tomorrow.

His co-accused - 41-year-old James Leen of Pilgrim Hill, Kilmourna, Listowel in Kerry - is to face his High Court bail hearing on Thursday.
